Malaysians March to Atlanta

Malaysians March to Atlanta

Malaysians March to Atlanta

by Shaz

For Malaysian Warhammer fans, this November brings something special, a chance to see our own players take the world stage. The World Championships of Warhammer 2025 in Atlanta isn’t just another event. It’s the pinnacle of competitive Warhammer, where the best players from every corner of the globe gather to test skill, strategy, and sheer hobby passion.

This year, Team Malaysia will be flying our flag proudly, representing the local scene in a tournament packed with talent. After our grueling National Qualifer Circuit which produced our Top 16, the winning trio beat the odds and are now in Atlanta to fight for national plastic soldier pride.

The Road to the World Stage

Malaysia’s journey to Atlanta didn’t happen overnight. Over the past few years, the local Warhammer community has seen incredible growth. From our monthly RTTs and interstore qualifiers, we have laid the path for players to reach WCW Atlanta.

The World Championships of Warhammer itself is Games Workshop’s premier event, an invitation-only competition where national champions and top-ranked players face off. Each player earned their slot through a mix of local performance, international rankings, and community recognition. For many of them, it’s a dream come true and a formidable challenge ahead.

Meet Team Malaysia

Each of our three representatives Daniel, Chris and Husain brings their own playstyle, faction mastery, and personality to the table. Here’s a closer look at who’ll be carrying the Malaysian banner in Atlanta.

What was your preparation like leading up to the World Championships?

I've been keeping up with the global 40k Meta through YouTube and some discord channels. Watching streams and analysis helps as well.

How did you decide on your faction and list for this event?

I decided to bring Custodes (even though we're rated pretty bad by most ppl atm) because I know the army inside out. I've been playing Custodes through the "good" and "bad" times for the whole edition. I would rather win or lose by playing my best, instead of making a mistake.

What’s your toughest matchup, and how did you adapt your list to anticipate it?

I think Admech, Aeldari and Tau are probably the harder shooty matchups and I dread facing a competant World Eaters player. I don't have any experience facing Admech and Tau. So I think researching as much as I can would be the best way to prep.

What does representing your country/community at the World Championships mean to you?

It's a dream to represent Malaysia in anything. Still feels surreal that it's happening.

What’s your personal goal/goals for this World Championships?

My goal is to play my best for all 8 games, 1 at a time. If I get to play vs some big names, that would be a real cherry on top. I'm just excited to see how I fair vs the best in the global scene of Warhammer 40k.

What was your preparation like leading up to the World Championships?

Play as many tourneys as possible. Regular practice partner was quake. But not enough practice due to real world demand for time.

How did you decide on your faction and list for this event?

IG becoz been playing guard since 1988🤣🤣 i like the lore, just some conscripted kampung folk armed with nothing but torchlights and balls of steel vs the whole universe of bad guys. Was a toss up between using combined arms or pure infantry (the recent lvo list). However after testing it out, despite coming 2nd in a local rtt, found out that cant tahan pushing around 200 men as it cause back pain ..also playing tanks give me more enjoyment...so decided to play tanks as its what I enjoy more...ha ha

What’s your toughest matchup, and how did you adapt your list to anticipate it?

Probably vs melee orientated armies like BA n BT. Just try to screen n shoot.

What does representing your country/community at the World Championships mean to you?

A dream of a lifetime. Realistically at age 57 there are not many chances in any sport or hobby to represent Malaysia. I am just so happy to be here ..no matter what the result may happen... furthermore last year I had a chance to represent msia but passed it on..kind of regretted it the whole year...ha ha

What’s your personal goal/goals for this World Championships?

Just going to take the 1968 Royal Johor Regiment out to the world and just enjoy myself thoroughly. At the end of the day its a hobby that I have enjoyed for over 40 years. I never expected this game to be so big when I started playing it in 87.

What was your preparation like leading up to the World Championships?

Honestly, it’s been a mix of practice games, late-night list tweaking, and a lot of talking shop with friends. I’ve been playing at local game shop casually and hitting a few events just to get used to different matchups. The main focus has been learning how to manage the tempo of games and make my shooting count. Guard needs coordination. you can’t just roll dice and hope it works out.

How did you decide on your faction and list for this event?

I’ve always played Astra Militarum. It’s my army through and through. I like the theme, and my only fully painted army, so I stuck with them. My list is built around solid fire support, some of bodies for board control, and just enough flexibility to react to different matchups. Nothing too fancy — just flexible movement by squadron unit via stratagem, disciplined firepower.

What’s your toughest matchup, and how did you adapt your list to anticipate it?

Anything fast and hard-hitting is always a bit of a nightmare. Stuff like Aeldari, World Eater, or Knights. They get in your face quick, and Guard doesn’t love that. I’ve tried to adapt by adding more screening units and cheap chaff to buy time. I also made sure I can still score points even if I’m under pressure. Basically, if I can survive the first couple of turns, I can usually start turning things around.

What does representing your country/community at the World Championships mean to you?

It means a lot, honestly. Getting the chance to represent us on a world stage is huge. It’s a bit surreal. I’m proud to fly the flag and show that the Guard can still fight with the best of them. Mostly, I just want to play good games and make everyone back home proud. Hopefully 🤞🏼

What’s your personal goal/goals for this World Championships?

Main goal? Play as best as i could, clean games and enjoy the experience. Of course, I’d love to make a deep run, but even if I don’t, I just want to prove the Guard can hold their ground and that disciplined play still wins games. HOLD THE LINE!!!!!

More Than Just a Tournament

For these players, Atlanta isn’t just about dice rolls and victories — it’s about representing Malaysia’s growing Warhammer community. Regardless of results, their participation alone is a massive step for the local scene, proving that with dedication, Malaysian hobbyists can compete at the same level as the best in the world.

Follow and Support Team Malaysia

The World Championships of Warhammer 2025 will take place in Atlanta, Georgia, bringing together national champions from all over the world for Warhammer 40,000, Age of Sigmar, and more. Fans can follow live updates through the Warhammer Community website, official Games Workshop streams.

If you’re part of the local community or just love seeing Malaysia represented on the global stage show your support online and cheer them on as they battle for glory.

Closing Thoughts

No matter how the dice fall in Atlanta, the journey itself is already a victory. Team Malaysia stands as proof of how far our scene has come — from hobby nights and store tournaments to representing our flag at the world’s biggest Warhammer event.

So here’s to our champions — Daniel, Chris, and Husain — and to every local player who helped shape this community. The road doesn’t end in Atlanta; it’s only the beginning of Malaysia’s story in the global Warhammer arena.
