Space Marines 2025: The Five New Detachments with Epic Heroes
The Emperor provides, and Games Workshop delivers — five brand-new Space Marine detachments have landed, each tied to an newly released or refreshed Epic Hero and dripping with flavour. Whether you like sneaky ambushes, fiery close-range fights, spearhead strikes, or rolling walls of ceramite and steel, there’s something here for every commander.
And yes — before you ask — all five are being clarified to count as proper Codex: Space Marine Detachments, which means they get the boosted Oath of Moment (+1 to Wound) bonus. Finally, the arguments can stop… or at least move on to “who gets the best buffs?”
Shadowmark Talon (Raven Guard – Aethon Shaan)
Raven Guard fans finally have a detachment worthy of their sneaky feathers. Shadowmark Talon leans into stealth, ambush, and surgical strikes. With Aethon Shaan at the helm, your units become harder to hit from afar, and you unlock clever stratagems like redeploy tricks or cheap ambushes.
Good unit picks:
- Phobos units (Infiltrators, Incursors, Eliminators)
- Vanguard Veterans with jump packs
- Aggressors for close-range firepower
- Scouts for early objective grabs
Forgefather’s Seekers (Salamanders – Vulkan He’stan)
If you like the smell of promethium in the morning, this detachment is for you. With Vulkan He’stan leading, Forgefather’s Seekers reward you for getting close: weapons gain Assault and extra Strength at 12″ or less, while Torrent weapons get even nastier.
Good unit picks:
- Infernus Squads
- Aggressors with flamestorm gauntlets
- Bladeguard Veterans for follow-up melee
- Impulsors and transports to rush the fire forward
Spearpoint Taskforce (White Scars – Suboden Khan)
Swift, decisive, and brutal — the Spearpoint Taskforce is all about tempo. With Suboden Khan or another fast leader, this detachment excels at redeploys, early pressure, and lightning-fast strikes.
Good unit picks:
- Outriders and bike squads
- Vanguard Veterans with jump packs
- Assault Intercessors for cheap melee pressure
- Infiltrators or Scouts to screen and control
Hammer of Avernii (Iron Hands – Caanok Var)
Iron Hands players rejoice: Hammer of Avernii is built for heavy armour, mechanised assaults, and battlefield control. With Caanok Var as your Epic Hero, you get redeploy shenanigans and buffs that help tanks and dreadnoughts dominate. A repeatable Oath outside of Guiliman is an amazing pickup!

- Predator tanks and other heavy vehicles

Emperor’s Shield (Imperial Fists)
The classic siege masters get their own flavourful detachment too. Emperor’s Shield doubles down on what Fists do best — durable shooting, holding the line, and grinding enemies down from range.
Good unit picks:
- Heavy Intercessors for objectives
- Devastators or Eradicators
- Gladiator or Repulsor tanks
- Bladeguard or Terminators for counter-charge
The Oath of Moment Saga
For weeks, everyone was arguing: “Do these detachments get the good Oath or not?” Tournaments had judges flipping through FAQs like priests reading scripture.
The answer is simple now: Yes. Shadowmark Talon, Forgefather’s Seekers, Spearpoint Taskforce, Hammer of Avernii, and Emperor’s Shield all count as codex detachments and get the +1 to Wound bonus.
